MEETING WITH JOHOR BAHRU MAYOR AND WATER MANAGEMENT AND DRAINAGE SYSTEM EXPERTS

Today I had a meeting with Johor Bahru mayor Dato’ Haji Mohd. Noorazam bin Dato ‘Haji Osman and water management and drainage system experts. They gave a briefing on initiatives and efforts to improve flood mitigation in Johor.
The meeting was held following a flood disaster that hit Johor since the end of last year until now. Floods are a problem that occurs almost every year. Although there have been improvements in flood mitigation efforts since the events of 2006, I intend to find a permanent solution to the flood problem in Johor.
Among the important aspects are drainage and sewerage systems that can accommodate high rainwater capacity, effective river management and a high level of readiness to handle disasters.
I believe that prevention is better than cure. In February, I will also be organising a river cleaning programme in Johor as well as special initiatives and programmes to raise public awareness on the importance of keeping our rivers clean.
HM Sultan of Johor and family will continue to work with the government in finding a permanent solution so that Johoreans do not have to face flood disasters again.
